Brief Biography

In 1982, I graduated with honors from McNeese State University with a B.S. in Business Administration. Three years later, in 1985, I received my J.D. from Tulane Law School, where I served as President of the Civil Law Society. I have practiced law in Lake Charles, Louisiana for the last 37 years. I have been a partner with the Lake Charles firm Plauche Smith & Nieset since 1988, where I have served as Managing Partner since 2005. I have devoted my entire practice to litigation and complex transactions. I have handled a broad range of cases, representing plaintiffs as well as defending businesses, industry and governmental entities in personal injury, class action, mass casualty, employment, products liability and civil rights lawsuits. I am admitted to, and have appeared before, the Supreme Court of the United States of America. I am admitted to and, on numerous occasions, appeared before the Louisiana Supreme Court. I am also admitted before all other Louisiana State Courts, as well as the United States District Courts for the Eastern, Western and Middle Districts of Louisiana and the United States Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals. I am a member of the Southwest Louisiana and Louisiana State Bar Associations, where I have held various committee positions. I am a past director for the Louisiana Association of Defense Counsel (LADC). I currently serve on the LADC Research and Policy Committee. I am a recipient of the 2015 Inns of Court Judge Albert Tate Professionalism award. I am a frequent CLE presenter to the Southwest Louisiana Bar Association and the LA Third Circuit Court of Appeal Judges’ Association. I was appointed by the Louisiana Appellate Judges as one of three attorney representatives on the Louisiana Judiciary Commission, upon which I currently serve as Chairman. For the last several years, I have been recognized as a top lawyer in Louisiana by Acadiana Profile, U.S. News, Best Lawyers in America and Louisiana Super Lawyers. I was recently inducted into the American College of Trial Lawyers at the 2022 annual conference in Rome, Italy.
